Vital Events Registration Application

Michigan’s new and improved system, the Vital Events Registration Application, or VERA, will be used for birth, fetal death, death, marriage, and divorce reporting. Vital statistics are compiled from these event registries to support public health, policy, and biomedical research.

VERA is designed to assist hospitals and midwives in meeting registration deadlines as set by Michigan law for birth, fetal death and paternity reporting and meets reporting standards as set by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).  VERA also has automated processing of vital records data to downstream recipients, including Newborn Screening, Medicaid, Immunization, Hearing Screening, Social Security Administration, Local Vital Records Offices, and the CDC.

Michigan’s Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS) provides a secure, web-based environment that supports online collaboration, from creating records to producing certified copies. EDRS allows funeral homes, medical certifiers, medical examiners, and registrar’s offices to complete death certificates online, 24 hours a day.

2023 Hospital Birth Certificate Timeliness Report is now available

Birth certificates are an important source of public health statistics that are used to improve the health and outcomes of mothers and newborns in Michigan and nationwide. Michigan law requires facilities to report births within 5 days of the date of birth (MCL333.2822(1)(a)). This report, produced from information in Michigan’s electronic birth registration system, VERA, assesses the performance of Michigan birth hospitals toward the five-day certification goal.

In all tables, the number of days to certify births is calculated as the difference between each child’s date of birth and the date certified in VERA.  In 2021, 64% of hospital births were certified within 5 days. In 2023, that number increased to 86%. Thank you for your hard work in helping to improve the timeliness of registration!
